How does book publishing business work

How does book publishing business work ?

Disclaimer: I am one of the founders @ Notion Press Publishing.
Book Publishing is quite a diverse industry and each type functions a little differently.
It can be broadly classified into Traditional Publishing and Self-Publshing.
Traditional publishing is where the publisher buys over the rights for the book from the author and pays out a small percentage of the profits as royalty to the author.
In exchange they get complete rights to publish, distribute and monetize the authors work in any which way they want.
In terms of control, the author of the book has very little say on the publishing or marketing process.
But ofcourse traditional publishers have a huge established network of distribution channels through which they try to push their books through and get maximum visiblity for them.
With over 2 million titles on Amazon alone the book industry is extremely competitive and publishers understand this.
It is also a well known fact that traditional publishers find it risky to give first-time authors a contract as they dont believe that they will make their money back.
This resulted in an extremely rigid editorial process where plenty of books with good potential were rejected.
Even authors like J.
K Rowling were rejected by dozens of publsihers before she finally cracked it.
This gave birth tho the need for self-publishing.
And over the ages self-publishing has picked up steam producing many best-selling books which have been later picked up by one of the big traditional publishing houses.
In self-publishing the authors own the rights for the book and have full controll over the publishing process.
Authors also earn a much larger share of profits from book sales.
But on the flip side, authors dont get the backing of a huge publishing name to push their book through their network.
The onus is on the author to promote the book well in order to attain success.
However there are multiple guided publishing platforms similar to

After that, you need to follow up as most of the houses receive a lot of proposals every day.

Publishing houses have become very accessible with the advent of social media so it’s easy to follow up and keep a track.

If you want your proposal to stand out then do send a cover letter and brief marketing plan for the book along with your proposal.

However, before you approach a publisher, it might be wise to ponder upon why a publishing house that gets at least 10 submissions a day should pick up your manuscript.
